Gradings are an important milestone in every student’s karate journey. They give students the opportunity to demonstrate what they’ve been learning in class and work towards earning their next belt or stripe.
Gradings are not just about belts — they help build confidence, focus, discipline, and resilience.
Gradings help students:
Set clear goals
Stay motivated in their training
Learn the value of practice and preparation
Build confidence by performing in front of others
Receive individual feedback from instructors
Every grading is a chance to grow — regardless of the result.
A grading usually includes:
Students train together beforehand to warm up, focus, and prepare. This also gives them a chance to train alongside students from other classes.
Students perform techniques from their syllabus, which may include:
Stances
Punches and strikes
Kicks
Blocks
Kata (patterns)
Pad or partner work (depending on level)
Instructors assess each student and provide feedback on their performance, effort, and understanding.
Students who meet the required standard are awarded their new belt or stripe — a proud moment that recognises their hard work.
Yes — and we encourage it!
Gradings are a great opportunity for family members to see what students have been learning and to support their progress.
Please remember that gradings are a focused environment, so we ask spectators to watch quietly and avoid distractions.
Success at gradings comes from consistent practice, not last-minute cramming.
We recommend students:
Attend classes regularly
Listen carefully to instructor feedback
Practise techniques at home
Review their syllabus videos (if provided)
Get a good night’s sleep before grading day
Effort and attitude matter just as much as technique.
Every student progresses at their own pace. Gradings are designed to be a positive learning experience that builds resilience and confidence.
Our goal is not perfection — it’s progress.
We’re proud of every student who steps up and gives their best.
